For all of you who do not know. None of the great work that we do would be possible without the help of the Murals DC program. We are so happy to be a part of what they are doing in the district and we hope to keep working with them to revitalize the communities in our city. Here’s a quick description for those who may be unfamiliar with the program…

The MuralsDC project is a program created by DC Councilmember Jim Graham as an effort to replace illegal graffiti with artistic works, to revitalize sites within the community and to teach young people the art of aerosol painting.  The goal of this initiative is to positively engage the District’s youth by teaching proper art techniques, providing supplies, and a legal means to practice and perform their skill in a way that promotes respect for public and private property and community awareness.   Site selection is based on areas of the District with high incidence of illegal graffiti as identified by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and other agencies.  Each mural reflects the character, culture and history of the neighborhoods in the District and interests from the business/residence owners.

You can download the program brochure below…

This link can also be found on the right  hand side of the page as well.

Two of our mural projects have recently been recognized by some of the bloggers in the DC community. We’re so glad to see the interest in our projects and we hope that people keep spreading the word. Special thanks to Prince of Petworth, and Words of WITte. We’ve added them both to our blog roll so be sure to check them out when you get a chance.

We kicked off our summer of murals with a full wall on Washington DC’s 14th street. The mural is an ode to DJ Menace, a resident of Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights who passed away in late 2003. DJ SMK and EON are among those who combined to paint the wall.

As you all know, WBL is always trying to take it to the next level with our younr writers. Take a look at what they were able to do to help us promote 2008s year’s “Bum Rush The Boards”. Then compare it with the work we’re doing now! They get better by the day!

Bum Rush is an annual hip hop chess tournament held for the youth that features skills workshops as well as the tournament itself…
